Dallas invented the frozen margarita and never looked back. The local pour is a frozen or a ranch water, Texas whiskey when it cools down, and Spanish wine on Knox when it doesn't. Uptown, Bishop Arts, and Knox-Henderson each pour a version.

In 1971, Dallas restaurateur Mariano Martinez adapted a soft-serve ice cream machine to pour consistent frozen margaritas for his restaurant — the world's first frozen margarita machine, now in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The hometown version is still a $7 frozen: Haywire Uptown on McKinney Avenue posts Monday through Friday 2pm–6pm throughout the restaurant, with $7 drinks (frozens, Bourbon Smash with Benchmark No. 8, select wine) and a $7 bites menu (mini elk tacos, wagyu sliders, chips & queso). Frozen, bourbon, elk tacos. That is Texas on one ticket.

Bishop Arts does the $7 cocktail

Atlas Cocktail Bar Bishop Arts on Bishop Avenue posts Monday–Friday 4pm–7pm with $7 wells, $7 cocktails (old fashioned, French 75, daiquiri, hugo spritz, bee's knees, ranch water), $5 all beers, and $5 bites (pretzel bites, meatballs, bruschetta, french fries). The $7 ranch water is the order — tequila, lime, Topo Chico logic in a Dallas glass. Our tequila primer sorts the blanco question.

Knox goes Spanish, Design District goes Brazilian

Barcelona Wine Bar Knox Henderson on Miller Avenue posts Happy Hour Monday–Friday 4pm–6pm with $7 mini cocktails, La Nevera Rioja by the glass $6, snacks pick 1 for $5.50 / pick 2 for $10 / pick 3 for $14.50, and charcuterie & cheese $13.5. On Oak Lawn, DeLucca Gaucho Pizza & Wine posts $8 craft cocktails (caipirinhas, French pear martini, raspberry lemon drop, magnificent margarita, maple old fashioned), $6 premium well drinks, $6 select glasses of wine, $8 bar bites, and $9 pizzas — with all-day happy hour Mondays and Tuesdays and 4:30pm–6:00pm Wednesday–Friday.

How to drink it like a local

  • 2pm: $7 frozens and Bourbon Smash at Haywire (Mon–Fri 2–6).
  • 4pm: $7 ranch water and $5 bites at Atlas (Mon–Fri 4–7), or $6 Rioja at Barcelona (Mon–Fri 4–6).
  • Monday: all-day happy hour at DeLucca — $8 caipirinhas, $9 pizzas.
